2013 Review

Welcome to the Ordnance Survey Golf Club's Annual review.

2013 was a again a good year for the club. Ordnance Survey enjoyed a full programme of outings and competitions. There were no new venues this year on the itinerary but a mixture of courses which we have played before. This year the captaincy was led by the dynamic and charismatic Phil Wyndham. The lasting memory of Phil's Captaincy will be not the venues he did attend but the outing and competitions he did not attend!

Our early season venue began in early May with members venturing west to Ashley Wood. A golf course near Blandford. Captain Wyndham drove in as is the Custom and after losing the first ball the second ball was collected by Alan Bush, who makes a habit of this! On a very pleasant day Bob Bailey carded a Gross 78 to win the London Road shield. Second was Chris Dunn with Darren Bailey third. Chris Dunn scored a net 70 to win the Chessington Cup with Lee Gladwin Stride 2nd and Bob Bailey 3rd. The afternoon competition was the Stableford Decanter this year won by Malcolm Fletcher with 39pts with Cliff Garvey second with Don Hobbs third.

The next event on the calendar at the end of May was the club championship held at the Southampton city golf course. With no Bob Bailey in the field Darren Bailey the next lowest handicap in the club became the automatic favourite for the coveted title. Darren did not disappoint he carded a Gross 144 to win club championship by beating the defending champion Chris Dunn into second place with Gordon Cutler Third. Chris Dunn retained the TM Baker Trophy with a net 132 with Gordon Cutler 2nd and Darren Bailey 3rd.

In June the OS travelled north to UpAvon Golf Club where the Topo Trophy was being played for. This course was last visited in 2008 and the 1st of the 18 hole venues. Don Hobbs in windy conditions scored 37 points to retain the trophy with Don Snowsill second and Dave Case third.
The July venue for 2013 for the Captain's Scramble was again Leckford. The second year in succession we have played the event there. The trio of Hobbs, Snowsill and Dunn were the winners this year with Hobbs, and Snowsill retaining the Trophy. The second outing in July was a trip to Dorset to play Moors Valley and the 2nd 18 hole outing and the venue of the Roger Martin Memorial Cup. The winner on this occasion was Kris Drudge with an excellent 38 points with Don Hobbs 2nd and Steve Hunt 3rd.
The August outing and the highlight of the year as far as the captain is concerned as Captains day was held this year at Rowland's Castle golf course. This was last played by Ordnance Survey in 2005 under Captain Simon Bevan. The course was difficult and scoring was high as this year's winner of the Captains Prize was Paul Taylor with net 69 and 27 points closely followed by Doug Johnson in 2nd place and Chris Dunn 3rd.
The last event of the year is the Autumn Flag and for those over 55 the Veterans Cup. This year we had a new venue for this competition which was Leckford Golf Course. This was the first time Ordnance Survey Golf Club had played this type of competition on this course. This year the winner was Dave Case who finished in the 18th Hole. Don Hobbs came second finishing one foot from the 18th hole with Kris Drudge 3rd. Dave Case also won the Veteran's Cup with a net 70 with Don Hobbs & Tony Gray 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The Match Play events ran throughout the year as usual. It was a year for new names on the trophies .Alan Bush won the Bentley cup by beating Don Hobbs in the final 4&3. This was Alan first win in the Winter knock out. In the Bob Sevage trophy Kris Drudge and Darren Bailey beat Malcolm Fletcher and Jim Evans. This was also the first time Kris and Darren had won the event. In the Sumner Cup last year Eddie Bulpitt and Darren Bailey lost in the final. This year they went one better by inflicting revenge on their conquerors a year ago by defeating Geoff Dear and Trevor Coupland. In the Matchplay Cup Kris Drudge beat Don Snowsill at Romsey Golf Course. This was Kris's maiden win in this competition.

The social matches this year were organised by the vice Captain Stefan Wells . The season opener against Southampton Solicitors was cancelled. In June the OS team beat the AA 2-1 and the good form continued against Robbie Rothwell's G4S side winning 2½ -1½. Unfortunately the match against ESRI was cancelled. In the Survey Cup against Southampton Golf Club, Ordnance Survey lost the match 3-1 at the Southampton city golf course but the icing on the cake was the Bowdrey Cup. The Ordnance survey stormed to victory with the score OS 9½ MOGs 7½ and SGC 6.
In other social Matches this year Phil Blakeman won the 11th Past Captains Cup at Leckford. This was the first time that a past captain had won the event twice. Phil last won this trophy in 2010. There was victory by the in house / associates team over the retired to win the diamond Jubilee cup and lastly, the Captain / Vice Captain match was tied 2 - 2 with the Captain retaining the trophy.
Other winners to mention is 2013, Don Hobbs won the Chairman's Cleek with a 216 for the best 3 scores from the 4 outings. Chris Dunn retained the 72 hole competition with a net score of -9 and the Eclectic was won for the first time by Trevor Coupland with an score of -13.25 . Lee Gladwin-Stride won the Christmas competition while the Phil Blakeman won the Easter competition. Throughout the summer from April to September Ordnance Survey ran monthly medals open to all members. These could be played on any course. The winners were as follows. In April James Terry carded a net 67 at Paultons. In May Trevor Coupland came out on top with a net 64 at Chilworth. In June Chris Dunn scored a net 62 also at Chilworth. In July Keith Davies scored a 65 at East Horton. In August Don Davies carded a wonderful 62 and lastly in September Chris Dunn came out on top with a net 66 winning on count back from Trevor Coupland and Dave Case.
Chris Dunn regained the order of Merit for the 8th time with a total of 842 2nd was Kris Drudge with 703 pts with Darren Bailey 3rd with 555 and Don Hobbs 4th with 553. Kris Drudge moved up another place from last year. What was gratifying was that the top 4 plays in the Order of merit were easily the most consistent players of the club of the 2013 season.

The OS golf club currently is in good hands. Partipation and support is good on most outings and we feel the future is good.

On a very sad note It was announced during the year that the 2002 Captain Steve Richards has lost his sight after an illness. The prognosis from the doctors that he is expected not to regain his sight. Steve over the years has been a great supporter of the golf club and his dry sense of humour will be sorely missed. The club sends Steve and his family our best wishes for the future.

Looking forward to 2014 our new Captain is Stefan Wells with Lee Gladwin Stride as his Vice Captain. We hope you will join us in giving Stefan our support and wish him a successful year as Captain. Let hope all his outings are blessed with fine weather.
