Welcome to the Ordnance Survey Golf Club's 2012 review.

2012 again was an excellent year for the Ordnance Survey Golf Club. Most of the venues enjoyed good support as we played a mixture of courses, some new whilst others have not been played for some time. This year the club was led by the likeable, friendly and pleasant captain Darren Bailey.

Our early season venue began in April with members venturing north to West Berks golf course. This was a new venue for an outing only visited before for matches against the school of military survey. Darren Bailey drove-in as is the custom and this time the ball was collected by Malcolm Fletcher. On a very pleasant day Bob Bailey carded a Gross 74 to win the London Road shield. Second was Chris Dunn with Geoff Dear third. Malcolm Fletcher scored a net 70 to win the Chessington Cup with Bob Bailey 2nd and Doug Johnson 3rd. The afternoon competition was the Stableford Decanter this year won by Chris Dunn with 40pts with Kevin Jones second with Geoff Dear third..
At the beginning of May the Survey again visited Leckford. This was the first of the 18 hole outings for 2011. Again this year the competition played was a scramble to decide the outcome of the Captains Scramble shield. The competition was played with a difference as it was open to non members and guests. This provided a very good turnout of 30 competitors. This year the team of Snowsill, Lelyveld and Hobbs carried off the prize.
The next event on the calendar at the end of May was the club championship held at the Southampton city golf course. This year the club championship was again billed as a straight fight between the baileys, Bob and Darren. However nobody anticipated a third party. Chris Dunn who carded a Gross 150 and won the coveted trophy beating Bob Bailey into second place with Paul Taylor third. Chris Dunn also secured the double by winning the TM Baker Trophy who scored a net 132 with Paul Taylor 2nd and Gear Dear 3rd.
In June the OS travelled east to Worldham Golf Club near Alton where the Topo Trophy was the trophy on offer. This course was new to the Ordnance Survey itinerary and the 2nd of the 18 hole venues. Don Hobbs in really atrocious conditions carded a net 71 with Cliff Garvey second and Steve Hunt third.
The July venue for 2012 was Quindell. However it was postponed due to a waterlogged course and had to be re scheduled for August. In July was a trip to North Hampshire to another new course on the itinerary. This was The Hampshire Golf Course near Andover, the venue of the Roger Martin Memorial Cup and the 3rd 18 hole outing. The winner on this occasion was in form Don Hobbs with an excellent 37 points with Kris Drudge 2nd and Rob Knowlton 3rd.
In August the OS visited the rescheduled outing at Quindell. This outing was different to the others as the tee times were booked on line. The winner on the day was Kevin Jones with 39pts with Steve Richards 2nd with Cliff Garvey 3rd.
The September outing and the highlight of the year as far as the captain was concerned was his Captains Day held at Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club. This was a complete new venue with the 17 competitors making the 70 miles trip along the south coast. On a beautiful sunny day with no wind, this year's winner of the of the Captains Prize was Chris Dunn with net 73 and 39 points closely followed by Mark Hunt in 2nd place and Malcolm Fletcher 3rd.
The last event of the year was the Autumn Flag and for those over 55 the Veterans cup. This year we had a new venue for this competition which was Wellow Golf Club. Again this year the winner went up the 19th Hole with Phil Blakeman finishing 151 yds from the hole. Rob Knowlton came 2ndfinishing on the 18th Green with Chris Dunn 3rd. Phil Blakeman also won the Veteran's Cup with a net 66 with Ged Powell & Malcolm Fletcher 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The Match Play events ran throughout the year as usual. Kris Drudge retained the Bentley Cup by beating Tony Gray in the final. In the Bob Sevage trophy Don Hobbs and Chris Dunn beat Gear Dear and Tony Gray on the 1st hole sudden death at Romsey Golf Club. Geoff Dear and Trevor Coupland defeated Eddie Bulpitt and Darren Bailey in the Sumner cup. In the match play cup Chris Dunn beat Don Hobbs on the 1st hole sudden death at Romsey Golf Club.
The social matches this year were organised by the Vice Captain Phil Wyndham. The season opener against Southampton Solicitors was cancelled. In June the OS team beat the AA 3-2 and the good form continued against the G4S side, winning 2½ - 1½. Unfortunately the match against ESRI was cancelled. Ordnance Survey lost the match 3-1 at the Southampton city Golf Course in the Survey Cup but the icing on the cake was the Bowdrey Cup. The Ordnance Survey stormed to victory with the score OS 12 MOGs 7 and SGC 5.
In other social Matches this year Kris Drudge won the 10th Past Captains Cup at Leckford, victory by the In-House/associates team over the retired to win the Diamond Jubilee cup. 4 ½ - ½ . The Captain / Vice Captain match was tied 3 ½ - 3 ½ with the Captain retaining the trophy.
Others winner to mention is 2012. Chris Dunn regained the order of Merit with a total of 804 2nd was Geoff Dear with 500 with Kris Drudge 3rd with 478 and Cliff Garvey 4th with 456. Malcolm Fletcher won the Chairman's Cleek with a 215 for the best 3 scores from the 6 outings. Chris Dunn also completed a double by retaining and winning the 72 hole competition and the Eclectic. Phil Blakeman won the Christmas Competition while the Vice Captain Phil Wyndham won the Easter Competition.
2012 produced two holes in one this year in OS competitions & matches. Chris Dunn had a hole in one whist playing his August ecelectic on the 5th Hole at Chilworth while Simon Bevan hit an ace on the 3rd Hole at Leckford during the Captain / Vice Captain match.
In 2012 it was a year when records fell. Chris Dunn over the season won 9 trophies which becomes an Ordnance Survey record. The previous record was six trophies won by Don Hobbs in 2008. Bob Bailey extending his record by winning the London Road Shield a 10th Time. Chris Dunn won the Match Play for a record 6th time and Don Hobbs & Chris Dunn extended the Bob Sevage Trophy record by winning this trophy a 7th time.

The OS golf club currently is in good hands. Partipation and support is good on most outings and we feel the future is good.
On a sad note it was announced that the 1980 club captain, Joe Wright recently passed away after several months fight against cancer. Joe was very active and supportive member until moving away a few years ago. His dry sense of humour will be sorely missed.
Looking forward to 2013 our new Captain is Phil Wyndham with Steffan Wells as his Vice Captain. We hope you will give Phil our support and wish him a successful year as Captain. Let hope all his outings are blessed with fine weather.
