2010 Review

Welcome to the Ordnance Survey Golf Club's review for 2010. 2010 was an excellent year for the club. Most of the venues enjoyed good weather as we played some new courses whilst others have not been visited recently. The Club Captain for the year was Don Hobbs.

Our early season venue began in mid April with members venturing north to Tidworth Golf Club. This course was a good test of golf although it did not stop Bob Bailey carding a Gross 78 to capture the London Road Shield for a record 8th time. Second was Mike Purvis with Darren Bailey third. Pete Williams carded a net 66 to win the Chessington Cup with Lee Gladwin Stride and Gordon Brading second & third respectively.

At the end of April the Survey journeyed to Leckford . This was the first of the eighteen hole outings for 2010. The competition on this outing was the Captains Scramble Shield where we actually played the scramble format . This year the team of Gordon Brading, Lee Gladwin Stride & Peter Williams carried off the prize.

Next up was the Club Championship at the end of May held at the Southampton Municipal golf course. This year Darren Bailey finally came to the fore and claimed his first Club Championship with a score of 145 with Paul Taylor in second place and Geoff Dear third. Darren Bailey also achieved the double as he carded a net 129 to claim the TM Baker for the first ever time with Paul Taylor in second place and Geoff Dear third. This was the fifth time the double has been achieved since 2002.

The June venue was Lee on Solent, last visited in 1992. The second eighteen hole venue of the year. Another first time winner of the Decanter was Steve Hunt who carded 38 points second was Don Hobbs, with Don Davies third.

In early July the Survey journeyed to Test Valley Golf Club a new venue for the Ordnance Survey. This was the third of the eighteen hole outings for 2010.This year the recipient of the Topo Trophy was Geoff Dear with a superb net 61 with Chris Dunn second with a net 63 and Paul Marshall third. The forth eighteen hole held in late July venue of the year was held at Corhampton last visited in 1988. The competition on this outing was the Roger Martin Trophy. Another first time winner of the Trophy was Lee Gladwin Stride who carded a net 68 second again was Chris Dunn, with Pete Williams third.

The highlight of the year as far as the Captain is concerned is Captains day held this year at West Wilts Golf Club at Warminster. This was last visited by the OS in 1999 when Gordon Cutler was Captain. The day is remembered for two things. For most of the day the heavens opened and all players got a good soaking and for Alan Bush who got a hole in one on the par 3 13th Hole. This year's recipient of the Captain prize was Kris Drudge with scores of a net 66 in the morning and 37 points in the afternoon round to claim this most prestigious trophy for the first time. The runner up was Doug Johnson with Kevin Jones third.

The last event of the year is the Autumn Flag and for those over 55 the Veterans Cup. This is held at Dibden Golf Course in October. Gordon Brading held his nerve to claim the major prize by finishing 11ft from the 19th hole. Second was Pete Williams with Kris Drudge third. Gordon Brading also completed the double and won the Veterans Cup with a net 66.

Unlike the previous year all the Match Play competitions were finished this year without too much delay. This year the greensome has proved very troublesome to complete. Phil Blakeman's dominance of the Bentley Cup continued when he defeated Chris Green. Phil has now won the Bentley cup nine times since 1998 which extends his OS record. In the summer there was a new name on the Match Play Cup when Tony Gray beat Robbie Rothwell. In the Bob Sevage Trophy Phil Hill & Paul Taylor defeated defending champions Don Hobbs & Chris Dunn by 2 & 1.
It also should be noted in this year's competition a marathon match was played in the quarter final at Romsey between Chris Dunn, Don Hobbs & Kris Drudge, Darren Bailey. This match lasted 3 rounds of golf and was played over 57 holes over a 3 to 4 week period when each time darkness brought proceedings to an end. The result finally was a 2 hole victory for Don and Chris.
In the Sumner Cup the competition is still to be resolved.

The social matches this year were organised by the Vice Captain, Kris Drudge. The season started with a cancellation of the Solicitors match . In June we had a set back with a 2 ½ -1 ½ defeat against the AA. In late June Kris Drudge's team faired better when we were held to a 3 - 3 draw over Robbie Rothwell's G4S side OS retaining the cup. In July the OS team battled against our old adversaries, Southampton Golf Club in the Survey Cup and were defeated 3 - 1 .The Match against ESRI was the best result of the year as we retained the cup by a winning margin of 38 points. This year the Bowdry Cup resumed with the Southampton Golf Club. Unfortunately the final result was Southampton G C 10, OS 8.5 & MOGS 5.5. At least the match was played.

Other Social Matches this year witnessed Phil Blakeman as winner of 8th Past Captains Cup at Leckford, victory by the In House/ Associates team over the Retired & Associates to win the Diamond Jubilee Cup and the Captain retaining the Captain verses Vice Captain match in spite of the result being 3-3 in the end of season match.

This year the OS Triangular Match was held in September near Dublin. On this occasion the Ordnance Survey came second in the competition.

Other Winners of note in 2010 was Don Hobbs who won the order of merit for the first time. Don just beat the defending champion Chris Dunn who was Second with Robbie Rothwell third. Chris Dunn won the Hardisty Cleek for a second time and in the Stroke Play Cup and Eclectic played throughout the summer, Phil Wyndham carried off the both prizes. Stefan Wells won the Christmas competition at Paultons with a supberb 44points while Paul Spicer beat off all opposition to win the Easter competition.

At AGM in November, it was agreed to resurrect the Bi-Centary Trophy, which hasn't been presented for a number of years, and to award it to the clubman of the year. This would be voted on by the members in future years, but to start it off for 2010 members who attended the annual dinner provided the winner. Congraulations to Kev Jones as the recipient for his tireless work in arranging the outings over the last number of years.

Looking Forward to 2011 the New Captain is Kris Drudge. We hope you will support Kris throughout 2011 and wish him a successful year as Captain. Let us hope all his outings are blessed with fine weather.
