School of Military Survey

The first social match of the year, against The School of Military Survey, took place on Wednesday 12th March. The team invited to play was

Bob Bailey, Phil Hill, Dave Case, Keith Davies, Don Davies, Gerry Henderson, Pete Williams, Alan Bush

Lost 3-1

On arrival at Leckford Golf course the greens looked a little brown. On closer inspection they had been top-dressed. First impressions were it would be difficult to putt on. It was surprising how good the putting was. Although the weather forecast was for the sun to shine, the cloud lingered most of the afternoon and a northerly wind made the top holes rather chilly.

The four pairs started off well, but observing a chip in from off the green on the second hole by our opponents, I had a feeling that it was not going to be our afternoon. By the end of the first nine, news of the first matches was that we were up in the first but down in the second. The other two games I did not have any information about.

A notice that we saw on the eighth fairway did leave us with a bit of a dilemma. How are you supposed to hit the golf ball when you are confronted by "Please keep off the grass!". Suffice to say, we ignored it.

With some steady, excellent play by Bob Bailey, I was happy to partner him to a 6 and 5 win. I helped by winning a few holes but seeing my tee shot on the eleventh, you would think I needed lessons. (Some of you are probably already thinking that, so I beat you to any comment).

As the games finished, it became apparent that we would be gallant runners up. That brings the overall score to 10 wins to the School of Military Survey, 3 to OS and one halved match over the last eleven years. We need to bridge that gap! The awarding of the trophy was completed at the Abbot's Mitre.

My thanks to all those that took part.

AA (The Fanum Shield)

We won the match 3-1and the individual results are as follows.

Bob Bailey & Doug Johnston Won 5&4 Adrian Jurd & Malcolm Fletcher Won 2 up on 18th
Gordon Cutler & Gary Bulbrooke Won 5&4 Stefan Wells & Kris Drudge Lost  2&1

The weather was very overcast and threatening but it managed to stay dry. The greens had been spiked and well watered making them very slow. The wind seemed to be gusting in all directions making conditions a little difficult.

Bob Bailey as always burnt the course up shooting a cool gross 73, ably supported by Doug Johnston. Malcolm Fletcher  and myself went 2 down early on but turned the match around with some good dovetailing. Gordon Cutler and Gary Bulbrooke both played close to there handicaps and won comfortably. Stefan Wells and Kris Drudge lost there match with a lady playing against them, but as neither of them had played Leckford before they can be forgiven for losing. They both thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon's golf though. We met up afterwards at the Mayfly Pub for a drink and a bit of socialising which was enjoyed by all. Luckily we won the match as I didn't realise there was a trophy at stake. Nobody seemed to mind.

Past Captains Shield

The inaugural social meeting for Past Captains took place at Leckford Golf Club on Thursday 10th July. All Past Captains we knew to be still alive and kicking were invited to partake in this event. In all 18 Past Captains took up the offer. The competition was a straight forward stableford round with the highest points taking the new shield, generously donated by Don Davies. The weather was very hot and made for the tee shots running a long way on dry ground. As can be seen by the results below, steady points were amassed by most players and there was some concern when two people had 35 points each and they could not be separated because they scored exactly the same points on each hole. Happily Dave Case came in to "save the day" with 39points. Congratulations Dave. The present Captain was invited along with the Vice Captain, and he was asked to present the trophy at the get together afterwards at the Tally Ho, Broughton.

Thanks also have to go to Steve Richards for arranging the afternoon, and it looks as if it will be an annual event.
